Allergic to Dogs? - discussion board

Welcome! This board is for sharing information, experiences, suggestions, and questions among pet allergy sufferers (people allergic to dogs). It is not intended to replace advice from medical professionals. Always contact your own allergy specialist for the diagnosis and treatment of your allergies!

There is NO "non-allergic" (no allergy causing) dog breed! All dogs produce dander, saliva, and urine that people can be allergic to. However, some dog breeds supposedly produce less dander than others. These breeds are often referred to as being "hypo-allergenic" (LESS LIKELY to cause an allergic reaction) or "allergy friendly". Read more.

For more allergy messages, visit the "Allergic to Dogs?" bb archives.

You can switch between two different board styles by clicking on the "switch to threaded style" or "switch to board style" link. I like the board style because it puts the latest messages on the top.

Please, use descriptive subject lines.

Strange rash

hi, my 11 month old daughter began to get a rash a short while after we got a rat terrier puppy. the rash is not everywhere. the only place she gets it is on her chest, either in small bumps or red circles. the doctor said it is not ringworm, the vet said the dog does not have ringworm. it is present for about a week, will go away for a few days then return on her chest. she is always fully clothed and is constantly in contact with the dog, but a rash nowhere else. any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Re: Strange rash

hi read your post and our 4and half yr boy has same symtoms. we got dog 7 weeks ago and 5 weeks ago rash etc started. It goes down a bit at sleeping time upstairs but once up in morning flares all over upper torso. Doctor said is excthma and gave couple days steroid cream but everything points to dog. Any advice welcome. As son is going crazy with rash.

Re: Strange rash

Hi Josh,
This may be something youve done already, but have you taken your little one for a skin test? Mine had one recently and we discovered it was cats! The excthma is unfortunately hereditary and something my brother suffered from ( mostly on the legs - like my boy )
Im not too keen on bieng palmed off on bloody steroid creams - they are not good for small children.. I came on this site looking for some ideas or old fashioned remedies as this condition is nothing new!
If I come across anything I´ll mail you and let you know... but as far as my (limited ) knowledge goes excthma and allergy are totally different.

Ps: Have you tried changing the brand of washing powder for your family wash? That sometimes causes havoc with young skin...
Good luck , and let me know of any good info?
Thanks - Matt

Re: Strange rash

Sounds like eczema. My son had it too and was later diagnosed with Asthma. The doc the 2 are virtually the same except one is internal and the other external. He suggested Eucerin cream and it did help.

Re: Strange rash

Regarding the rash, I recently heard of a baby that was getting an allergic reaction to some component in the metal snaps on onesies and sleepers. Check to see of the rings on the skin are in the location of the snaps. Strange-but true!!
