Dont get a dog if your family member has allergies!
As a chronic sufferer of allergies to All animals, those of you who do not have allergies and are considering letting your husband, child, or boyfriend suffer because YOU want a pet, PLEASE DONT DO IT!
Your loved one will be miserable, even though they pretend like it is ok. They will do anything to keep the family pet to make you happy and not feel guilty about needing to get rid of it. Do you think it is fair that your loved one takes medication on a daily basis so you can keep your dog? I wish you could see what it is like to be sneezing 1000 times a day, itching all over, and unable to breathe in your own home. Its horrible! And yet the allergy sufferer feels guilt and embarrassed over being allergic! My relationship is about to end because of my allergies and I urge you to reconsider getting an animal if you truly value your loved one. ITS NOT WORTH IT!

Re: Dont get a dog if your family member has allergies!
Finally! People who understand! I was diagnosed with asthma in 1993, and my husband was diagnosed in 1991. This year, my attacks have been so severe that I have developed almost chronic asthmatic bronchitis and I am on four different medications to control my symptoms. My husband sees an allergist regularly also, get shots and takes three different medications. Nothing seems to relieve our dog allergies, and since we've known for nearly 15 years that we are allergic to pet dander and it triggers our asthma attacks, we have never owned a pet even though we love animals. BUT, our family doesn't get it! They keep getting dogs! My doctor has told me many times, and reminded me this week, to stay away from dogs, and now my mom-in-law is pitching a fit because I won't come visit on mother's day in her furry house. HELP! She says I should just take a pill! She can keep her pets. I understand that she loves them more than us. But, it kills me that she keeps behaving like this is a new development, that we are the enemy, that we are making excuses. Has anyone out there convinced family members that they are indeed allergic to dogs? I feel like I need a doctor's note to get out of visitation! I am so sad and frustrated, and she is refusing to compromise on another location. Well, I refuse to die this week!

Yep I've had the same situation. My husband didn't understand when we went to visit his family. I'd wind up with asthma and he'd be angry at me for wanting to leave to get out of the situation, so I'd go sit alone in the car while he'd socialize.
BTW: he's about to be my ex. If the person is insensitive about your getting physically ill, than most likely they're insensitive about other issues. Good riddance to him!

Re: Dont get a dog if your family member has allergies!
I have severe allergies to all kinds of animals with fur such as cats, dogs, rabbits, and even horses. Growing up we had dogs, cats, kittens, rabbits, frogs, fish, birds and any other kind of animal you can bring into your home. I suffered so bad during my childhood. I would always be sneezing and swollen with hives. It was a terrible experience. My son has also been diagnosed with severe allergies to lots of things including cats but he tested negative for dogs. For his 8th birthday my husband got him a Bichon Poodle mix. I had not had any allergic reactions to this dog at all.

Re: Dont get a dog if your family member has allergies!
Oh this is all so true. I have posted a message on this board and visited this site for the first time. I have been so miserable for the past year since I bought my son a dog. Not thinking that I may be allergic to it - I had no idea! I already had asthma but I had two cats and seemed to rub along ok with them? But have I? .... because I have had these cats for 5 years and I would say my asthma has got worse over the past 5 years and particularly over the past year. I have had an allergy test but it came back ok for allergy to cats and dogs? but i don't understand this because I am convinced that it is the dog that is making matters worse. Do you know of any other tests I can have because until my 18 and 17 year old kids are told in black and white that I am allergic they will not rehome the dog they just tell me to loose weight and get fit.

Re: Dont get a dog if your family member has allergies!
I completely agree! For me, even just being in the same house as a dog or a cat is terrible. I can't even go over to someone's house if they have a cat or dog because ten minutes after I get there I'll be sneezing, my eyes and nose will be itching, and I'll be itchy all over from just being in the general vicinity! I can't even imagine how miserable I'd be living in the same house as a dog or cat.

I feel you guys. I am terrible allergic to Dogs but no one seems to understand or care. I simply CAN NOT breathe when I am in a house with dogs. For some reason people like to act like your overreacting or whatever. Oh, and lets not mention that like 90% of all people have dogs in their house. Nothing has gave any relief for me. Not pills or shots or whatever. Any suggestions?

Yeah, but what if you don't have asthma. What if you only have itchy throat, itchy eyes, sneezing, cough...etc, but if you do not have terribly bad allergies, are you still eligible for a dog?
