Allergic to Dogs? - discussion board

Welcome! This board is for sharing information, experiences, suggestions, and questions among pet allergy sufferers (people allergic to dogs). It is not intended to replace advice from medical professionals. Always contact your own allergy specialist for the diagnosis and treatment of your allergies!

There is NO "non-allergic" (no allergy causing) dog breed! All dogs produce dander, saliva, and urine that people can be allergic to. However, some dog breeds supposedly produce less dander than others. These breeds are often referred to as being "hypo-allergenic" (LESS LIKELY to cause an allergic reaction) or "allergy friendly". Read more.

For more allergy messages, visit the "Allergic to Dogs?" bb archives.

You can switch between two different board styles by clicking on the "switch to threaded style" or "switch to board style" link. I like the board style because it puts the latest messages on the top.

Please, use descriptive subject lines.

Re: I REALLY WANT A DOG

I am allergic to dogs also. I find that I do better around smaller dogs since they produce less dander. But, your dad is just going to have to be around the specific breeds to see what kind of reactions he has. And try to be around ADULT dogs. Puppies are going to have less dander and can give a negative allergic reaction when the adult could make him sneeze. I had a schnauzer when I was growing up and I'm getting a Maltese now. They say that a Giant Schnauzer has lower dander levels. Thats a rather large dog. Maybe look into those??

Re: I REALLY WANT A DOG

Hi everyone! I reply to this topic because there's no point to start a new one because I'm going to talk the same subject which is...
I really want a dog.

All my life I have been wanting a dog but my mom has never let me to have one. 4 years ago I found out that I'm allergic to dogs. My heart just broke.
Now I'm moving to my own apartment and I have started wondering: can I finally have a dog? Could I cope with one?
Then found this website. I red the list of the products which maybe relief allergy and the other list which advised how to make my home as hypo allergic as possible. Best thing is that I found out that Chinese crested is one of the lower dander breeds. I was so happy because I have always liked that breed.
I have been thinking of getting every product what is recommended in this website (hepa air purifier, Allerpet d for dogs, washable dog bed, hepa vacuum cleaner). I already have a salt pipe (try this! It helps breathing). And I'm going to organise my home so it will be easy to clean and no dogs allowed to a bedroom!

I have really thought this through and thought every possible way to make my home as hypo allergic as possible but still I can't decide what to do. I cannot help thinking that I'm the most selfish person on earth if I get a dog even though I'm allergic. But not getting a dog will break my heart over and over again. *tears*
Sometimes I really think that I really, really could do this and get along just fine with the little dog. But I can't stop thinking what if my allergic as going to get worse or what if I get asthma? Is it really worth to risk my health? I have been thinking this hard and I have asked couple of my relatives could they take my dog if I can’t keep it.
I have also been thinking that I'm allergic to dust mites as well so if my allergic get worse it may be because of dust mites not because of the dog, right? It may get worse even if I never get a dog.

Please give me your opinions!

(Sorry my bad English)

Re: I REALLY WANT A DOG

Hiya, My hubby is allergic to dogs. We really want one. I have done a bit of research on different low dander dog breeds. My husband is not allergic to huskies. They are big dogs, but I have been told that they make poor house pets. On further investigation I found Native American Indian Dogs. These are beautiful dogs that look similar to huskies, they are big. Unfortunately they are bred in America and Canada, they don't export and we stay Scotland. We have visited a few breeders of different dogs we liked the look of. A good breeder will be happy to let you visit a few times to check how your allergies react. We are on the waiting list for a Hungarian Puli pup now. They have a wool coat and non allergic saliva (as far as hubbies skin reaction was concerned.) We will keep the coat quite short as this will lower dander retention in this breeds textured coat. Regular bathing is also recommended. I hope this helps with your dads wish for a big dog.
