Allergic to Dogs? - discussion board

Welcome! This board is for sharing information, experiences, suggestions, and questions among pet allergy sufferers (people allergic to dogs). It is not intended to replace advice from medical professionals. Always contact your own allergy specialist for the diagnosis and treatment of your allergies!

There is NO "non-allergic" (no allergy causing) dog breed! All dogs produce dander, saliva, and urine that people can be allergic to. However, some dog breeds supposedly produce less dander than others. These breeds are often referred to as being "hypo-allergenic" (LESS LIKELY to cause an allergic reaction) or "allergy friendly". Read more.

For more allergy messages, visit the "Allergic to Dogs?" bb archives.

You can switch between two different board styles by clicking on the "switch to threaded style" or "switch to board style" link. I like the board style because it puts the latest messages on the top.

Please, use descriptive subject lines.

allergy to new puppy

I just got a new Border Collie puppy, he's now 12 weeks old, and he's beautiful.
since i have had him the past two weeks i have been getting a lot of allergy symptoms, really sore throat and difficulty in swallowing and sore glands, sinus pain in face and head and earache, itchy eyes and itching all over my body, plus burning tongue and when he licks me it burns.
I had a dog for 17 years, she died about 12 months ago and i was fine with her.
I know i have a lot of symptoms and feel in a lot of pain, but i can't find it in my heart to part from him, i don't know how long i can go on with this, but each time i think about rehoming him i cry and get very upset.
I take anti-histamine for the itching and that helps, but my throat and sinus stays bad, doctor didn't give me anything for them.
I know it makes sense to rehome him, but i just can't do it at the momment, i'm hoping this might improve in time, any encouragement will be appreciated.

Re: allergy to new puppy

Hi Jay
It is very hard to think about giving the puppy up, i suffer realy bad at the momment, its been two weeks now, and it has been very difficult.
What symptoms do you and your wife get, is it all the time in the house even when you are not by your puppy.
Im going to try allepet, the stuff you rub on your puppy, which is surpose to help cut down the allergens comming of the puppy.
Ive had to order it online, they don't sell it here in England, so i will have to wait for that to come.
Ive tried doing everything i can, and read about doing, to keep my puppy, i hope allepet helps.
I think we will come to a point when we will know what to do, we will be only able to take so much, keep trying all you can to help yourselfs and do the enviroment stuff in your house that Lucys web site says, and see if it improves, it may take a bit of time, to see if we can improve, if it just gets to much then we will have to part with our beautiful puppies, but least we know that we had tried our very best.
I hope it works out for us.

Re: allergy to new puppy

Hello, could you tell me if your syptoms have gotten any better? I just got a new puppy and am having some of the same problems. I break out in a horrible itchy rash on my arms when I hold him, and this morning I'm sneezing like crazy and my eyes are swollen, and I've noticed I'm wheezing a little bit. I'm willing to try anything, I do not want to get rid of the little guy, it will crush me! Any advice would be great!!!

Re: allergy to new puppy

Hi Tammy
Im sorry to hear your struggling with new puppy, i don't think there is much improvement, but im still trying to hold on to him, and trying out everything that might help, i can't part from him even though i have horrible allergies.
I take antihistamine twice a day, which help a bit with icting, but it does not help my throat or sinuses, and i have used Petal Cleanse or Allepet which you rub on them and thats surpose to help, you can order it over the internet or the chemist can order it for you.
Im trying to eat better vegetables and fruit to try a boost my immune system.
Im in the same dilemma, and don't know what to do yet, im hopeing i will get use to him, but i don't know if you can, its terrible being in this situation, when you love the dog.
Go to you doctor and ask him to try you on antihistamines meds, you might have to try a few differant ones to find one that helps, and try all the things Lucy recommends on this site.
Sorry i can't help any more than this, i will email you if i do start to improve.
Good luck
Michaela

Re: allergy to new puppy

Hi guys, I am having the same problem as you, I think I may be allergic to my new baby pug dog. Its breaking my heart and I simply cannot part with him. I've waited so long to get him and we've bonded so well, it'd kill me to have give him back to the breeder - its just not an option.

Since he arrived on Monday I've been wheezing and my skins been a bit itchy, although I don't have the trademark runny nose, itchy eyes, sneezing or rash or anything. My hands were itchy today but I've applied some handcream and it seems to have settled. I bathed my boy with tea tree shampoo and I've been wiping him with anti-allergen pet wipes. I've ordered an anti-allergen room spray and Petal Cleanse and pray to God it works for me. I'll be sure to let you all know how I get on.

When I went to view my puppy a few weeks ago I spent 3 hours at the breeders house holding all the puppies and playing with her other 12 adult pugs. I didn't have any allergy symptoms at all that day or in the days that followed. I am totally baffled and am wondering if this little guy is the cause of the symptoms.

I have owned a Springer Spaniel (which are meant to be high allergen dogs), other dog breeds, birds, rodents etc and have never had any problems in the past. My mother has Shih Tzu who I can cuddle for hours and have no problems with, even if he licks me or accidentally wee's on the floor and I clean it. I am so upset about this and its spoiling my enjoyment of my new puppy. My husband and 3 year old son seem to be unaffected - just me.

Please, please if anyone can recommend anything that might help me (no matter how silly it sounds) I'd be so grateful. I've suffered from depression for 3 years and since I've gotten this little guy I feel as though I've made a breakthrough in the short time I've had him.

Good luck all you guys, I hope you can tolerate your new pets, I know how hard it is to think about letting them go.

Re: allergy to new puppy

Please try Petal Cleanse room spray and Petal Cleanse for dogs...it helped me soooo much! Now I don't have to take antihistamines at all ! Its amazing stuff and my dogs coat is beautiful after I wipe him with the lotion. Even when Barney's casting really heavily I still have no symptoms. I dont suppose the previous occupants of your new place had cats or any other animals you may be allergic to? Good luck!

Re: allergy to new puppy

Hey, I'm so glad I'm not the only one going through this. I am suffering from itchy eyes to nasal congestion too. Our 5 months old chihuahua mixed terrier came into our lives about 3 months ago and I've noticed that my allergies were worst than ever. I didn't want to admit that as a reason but it was starting to interfere with my work so my boss suggested that I should meet with an Allergist to test if I'm really allergic to my dog. Oh my gosh, I did not even want to think that it could possibly be my dog. So sad:( Anyhow, I'm meeting with an allergist this coming Tuesday so I will find out. If it is true then I will find other alternatives. My very very very last resort is to replace him in another home. I mean, who knows their baby more than their mama, right? I will keep in touch with all of you to see what I find out.
