Allergic to Dogs? - discussion board

Welcome! This board is for sharing information, experiences, suggestions, and questions among pet allergy sufferers (people allergic to dogs). It is not intended to replace advice from medical professionals. Always contact your own allergy specialist for the diagnosis and treatment of your allergies!

There is NO "non-allergic" (no allergy causing) dog breed! All dogs produce dander, saliva, and urine that people can be allergic to. However, some dog breeds supposedly produce less dander than others. These breeds are often referred to as being "hypo-allergenic" (LESS LIKELY to cause an allergic reaction) or "allergy friendly". Read more.

For more allergy messages, visit the "Allergic to Dogs?" bb archives.

You can switch between two different board styles by clicking on the "switch to threaded style" or "switch to board style" link. I like the board style because it puts the latest messages on the top.

Please, use descriptive subject lines.

first time allergy

if any one has any input on this situation please help me. ok here it goes. I have had cats and dogs in the past while growing up and even my boyfriends sister had a dog we dog sat for a few months and never have I ever showed allergy symptoms. I never had allergy syptoms period.. i actually dont even know if i have allergies but anyway. I got a corgi the day before thanksgiving and when i woke up the next morning my left eye was hurting and watering nonstop. i first thought it was my contacts so i took them out and wore glasses all day and still my eye was going insane. put eyedrops in and it helped alittle but not much. then the day after thanksgiving went to work with contacts in and i was fine all day, untill i got home to my baby corgi, then my eye started acting up... what could cause this? like i said i had 2 cats, 2 german sheppards and a dachsund before and this never hapened...

Re: first time allergy

If you cannot pinpoint any other reason for the eye irritation, you could indeed be allergic to your new dog.

Getting a new dog after not having any for a while could trigger allergies that you didn't have before (or at least not as bad). This happened to me.

Re: first time allergy

As women leave their prime childbearing years, the immune system that was "quiet" to enable carrying foreign protein (i.e. a fetus), can become quite active. Women who never had problems in the past can develop allergies to any number of formerly tolerated substances/animals. Annecdotely, redheads are especially prone to this phenomenon.

Re: first time allergy

I am also suffering from eye allegeries for the first time in my life. I've had a dog for 15years..and out of the blue i have had eye irritation and watery for 2 months. Ive seen a doctor but need to see an allergy specialist. Im miserable at the thought of giving up my dog...dont know what to do. Is there any over the counter eye remedies until i can find a specialist???Help

Re: first time allergy

You can try the over-the-counter antihistamine Claritin (or generic equivalents which are cheaper - look for the active ingredient loratadine 10 mg). It is non-drowsy.
