Allergic to Dogs? - discussion board

Welcome! This board is for sharing information, experiences, suggestions, and questions among pet allergy sufferers (people allergic to dogs). It is not intended to replace advice from medical professionals. Always contact your own allergy specialist for the diagnosis and treatment of your allergies!

There is NO "non-allergic" (no allergy causing) dog breed! All dogs produce dander, saliva, and urine that people can be allergic to. However, some dog breeds supposedly produce less dander than others. These breeds are often referred to as being "hypo-allergenic" (LESS LIKELY to cause an allergic reaction) or "allergy friendly". Read more.

For more allergy messages, visit the "Allergic to Dogs?" bb archives.

You can switch between two different board styles by clicking on the "switch to threaded style" or "switch to board style" link. I like the board style because it puts the latest messages on the top.

Please, use descriptive subject lines.

Can you be allergic to only one dog?

I no longer live at home and my dad says that he is now allergic to my dog. I have had my dog for 4 years now and this problem has only started about a year ago. I have tried doing all the things to reduce pet dander in my home such as, Using a hepa filter, we have hardwood floors put in, not allowing my dog to jump on or lick us, As well as putting clothes on straight from the dryer for the whole family before we visit my dad. It's gotten so bad that we are not allowed to visit any of the family because if my mom goes anywhere we've been the pet dander gets onto her clothes and she then transfers it back to dad at their home. My dad also has 2 cats and 2 dogs living with him one is the exact same breed as ours and they don't cause any problems. Anybody have any advice?
HELP dad wants us to get rid of our dog but I think it's all in his head.

Re: Can you be allergic to only one dog?

Are all of these three dogs spayed or neutered? Some people claim they are more allergic to non-neutered and non-spayed dogs (different hormone levels).
