Allergic to Dogs? - discussion board

Welcome! This board is for sharing information, experiences, suggestions, and questions among pet allergy sufferers (people allergic to dogs). It is not intended to replace advice from medical professionals. Always contact your own allergy specialist for the diagnosis and treatment of your allergies!

There is NO "non-allergic" (no allergy causing) dog breed! All dogs produce dander, saliva, and urine that people can be allergic to. However, some dog breeds supposedly produce less dander than others. These breeds are often referred to as being "hypo-allergenic" (LESS LIKELY to cause an allergic reaction) or "allergy friendly". For more allergy messages, visit the "Allergic to Dogs?" bb archives.

You can switch between two different board styles by clicking on the "switch to threaded style" or "switch to board style" link. I like the board style because it puts the latest messages on the top.

Please, use descriptive subject lines.

Children and dog allergies question

My daughter has severe dog allergies. We have an AHT and she is able to tolerate her as long as we bath her and put lotion on her frequently and my daughter doesn't touch her face after touching the dog.

My problem is my grandmother has a daschund that she thinks she can no longer care for so she is adamant that my mother takes her daschund. My daughter is very close with my parents and this will be an issue for her(my duaghter has eczema as well as allergy induced asthma). We visit them at least once a week and she frequently spends the night there.

Can anyone advise me to any articles relating to daschunds and dog allergies? Any advise on how to handle the situation? It is very frustrating since my family acts like it isnt a big deal, and we make it a big deal...It is very serious for us...we used to have dogs that shed (prior to us knowing about her allergies) and we were in the hospital once per month for her asthma. Once we found new homes for the dogs almost all of my daughters symptoms went away. Our doctor said that she could have major problems and be hosptialized being around dogs, and that she cannot be around them even in backyards, etc.

Thank you!
renee
