Allergic to Dogs? - discussion board

Welcome! This board is for sharing information, experiences, suggestions, and questions among pet allergy sufferers (people allergic to dogs). It is not intended to replace advice from medical professionals. Always contact your own allergy specialist for the diagnosis and treatment of your allergies!

There is NO "non-allergic" (no allergy causing) dog breed! All dogs produce dander, saliva, and urine that people can be allergic to. However, some dog breeds supposedly produce less dander than others. These breeds are often referred to as being "hypo-allergenic" (LESS LIKELY to cause an allergic reaction) or "allergy friendly". Read more.

For more allergy messages, visit the "Allergic to Dogs?" bb archives.

You can switch between two different board styles by clicking on the "switch to threaded style" or "switch to board style" link. I like the board style because it puts the latest messages on the top.

Please, use descriptive subject lines.

Small hives from new dog

I got a new dog a few days ago from an animal shelter. He was very dirty and on the way home in the car I began to get hives on my lap because he was sitting on me. I bathed him as soon as I got home but everytime I play with him I get small hives where he has touched my skin. I'm wondering if he still might have lots of dander from other dogs and be dirty from being a stray. He shed an immense ammount on the first day and it seems like he hasn't been groomed in a long time. I am wondering if he just has excess dander because of of the shelter and his time as a stray and if my hives will eventually go away. He doesn't cause me any other allergic symptoms. I also live with two chihuahua mixes who I don't react to at all. I don't know what breed he is. At the shelter they told me he is a chihuahua mix. I think he might be part min pin as well. Has anyone else experienced this with a shelter dog? Do you have any suggestions for what I can do to stop the hives? Thanks.

Re: Small hives from new dog

For 30+ years we have always gotten our dogs from a shelter. After you have bathed him and gotten him onto a regular dog food he should be stable. Try a 2nd bath and brush him out well. The fact that you have similar coated dogs should mean he would not bother you. See if you can tell whether you are reacting to his coat (dander) or his saliva. Have someone else pick him up and have him lick your neck. If you get hives there it could be just his saliva. Is his fur stiffer than your other dogs? It could be just the texture of the fur rather than dander. Other than antihistimine and long sleeve shirts I am not sure what else you could do about it. Good Luck!
