Allergic to Dogs? - discussion board

Welcome! This board is for sharing information, experiences, suggestions, and questions among pet allergy sufferers (people allergic to dogs). It is not intended to replace advice from medical professionals. Always contact your own allergy specialist for the diagnosis and treatment of your allergies!

There is NO "non-allergic" (no allergy causing) dog breed! All dogs produce dander, saliva, and urine that people can be allergic to. However, some dog breeds supposedly produce less dander than others. These breeds are often referred to as being "hypo-allergenic" (LESS LIKELY to cause an allergic reaction) or "allergy friendly". Read more.

For more allergy messages, visit the "Allergic to Dogs?" bb archives.

You can switch between two different board styles by clicking on the "switch to threaded style" or "switch to board style" link. I like the board style because it puts the latest messages on the top.

Please, use descriptive subject lines.

my mom is allergic to dogs and cats

I really want a dog but my mom is allergic to them. Please send me a list of hypoallergic dogs to see if my family likes them. My mom finally said yes to a dog so I really want to take this chance before she changes her mind, so I really need that list. I'm counting on you.

A dog lover,

Re: my mom is allergic to dogs and cats

The list of allergy breeds on the previous post is a fair guide, but is not reliable for every person. Each person can react differently to each breed. Example - the first dog on the "low dander" list is the basenji - this is a lovely dog which I adopted and had to return because I was covered with hives before I got it home. Take your mom to a local rescue center and have her select a dog. Have her play with it for at least a half hour to see if she reacts to it. For my allergies, the hound family is the worst and the soft coated dogs are the best, but each person is different. Good Luck!
