Allergic to Dogs? - discussion board

Welcome! This board is for sharing information, experiences, suggestions, and questions among pet allergy sufferers (people allergic to dogs). It is not intended to replace advice from medical professionals. Always contact your own allergy specialist for the diagnosis and treatment of your allergies!

There is NO "non-allergic" (no allergy causing) dog breed! All dogs produce dander, saliva, and urine that people can be allergic to. However, some dog breeds supposedly produce less dander than others. These breeds are often referred to as being "hypo-allergenic" (LESS LIKELY to cause an allergic reaction) or "allergy friendly". Read more.

For more allergy messages, visit the "Allergic to Dogs?" bb archives.

You can switch between two different board styles by clicking on the "switch to threaded style" or "switch to board style" link. I like the board style because it puts the latest messages on the top.

Please, use descriptive subject lines.

Hives from one boxer but not the other

I have had my boxers their whole life. My female is 5 and my male is 2. I have never been allergic to my female, but every time i touch my male(newer) dog, i break out in an itchy rash. What is the difference, is there anything i can do. I feel bad because i have a totally different relationship with the male that the female. I know this sounds awful, but I try not to touch the male too much. Dont worry though, he is my husbands dog!!!

Re: Hives from one boxer but not the other: me too!!

I also have this problem. I recently bought a boxer from a breeder in Tucson and when the dog brushes his paws against my skin, particularly my forearms, my arms break out in red bumps. I have no idea what to do and/or what is the cause. I've never been allergic to dogs, cats, or any pet for that matter. Also, I know I'm not allergic to boxers b/c I watched my buddies boxer for two weeks before and showed no similar symptons. What is going on here?

I would love to hear further about your story.

Re: Hives from one boxer but not the other

Hi there.
I have a 5 year old Labrador and he affected my skin for a little while...(hives formed). Now I just bought a new labrador and I cant touch him after the 3rd day....I break out in hives really really bad. My tummy, arms, upper and lower legs!
I can't get rid of my baby!

Is the injections worth it? will they work for me???

Re: Hives from one boxer but not the other

I'm not sure why but the allergic reactions have all but subsided. It took about 6-8 weeks but eventually the reactions just went away, I can't believe it! During that time period I switched the dogs food and I also got him neutered. Either one of those two events were the reason (although two vets I spoke with said that couldn't be the cause, but oddly enough another vet said try changing the dogs food to chx vs. beef based or vice versa) or I just got used to him over time. I really feel for you b/c I know how hard it is to be allergic. I had to give my last dog back to the breeder b/c of my reactions. There is also a product out there called Allerpet D that you might want to look into. Instead of putting it on the dog I would rub it directly on my forearms and it caused a lot of the itching to subside, although the bumps were still there. I used to use it every day but don't have to anymore since the reactions went away.
