Allergic to Dogs? - discussion board

Welcome! This board is for sharing information, experiences, suggestions, and questions among pet allergy sufferers (people allergic to dogs). It is not intended to replace advice from medical professionals. Always contact your own allergy specialist for the diagnosis and treatment of your allergies!

There is NO "non-allergic" (no allergy causing) dog breed! All dogs produce dander, saliva, and urine that people can be allergic to. However, some dog breeds supposedly produce less dander than others. These breeds are often referred to as being "hypo-allergenic" (LESS LIKELY to cause an allergic reaction) or "allergy friendly". Read more.

For more allergy messages, visit the "Allergic to Dogs?" bb archives.

You can switch between two different board styles by clicking on the "switch to threaded style" or "switch to board style" link. I like the board style because it puts the latest messages on the top.

Please, use descriptive subject lines.

Is Nausea & diarrhea a sysmptom of dog allergies

I recently lost a dog that I had for six years. My son has suffered from abdominal pains for 2 or 3 of those years. The episodes stopped a year ago when I gave him ginger root pills. Three days ago I brought home a new puppy, a black lab/shepherd mix. My son has been sick for the last two days. I have not heard of these symptoms with regards to an allergic reaction and we are desperately hope it is not the dog. Has anybody had this experience? Or heard of anybody else experiencing this?

Could he be allergic to something in his food? Cramping, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea are common symptoms of food allergies. What did you pediatrician say about his stomach pains? Have you changed anything in his diet? Some people also get gastrointestinal symptoms from anxiety. How does he feel about the new dog?

Re: Is Nausea & diarrhea a sysmptom of dog allergies

We have had all of the tests done, and I also took him for counselling thinking it may have been anxiety. The psychologist said I was wasting my money, that he was a very happy child, and the only test left is the Scope which I am reluctant to put him through. I was discussing it with a work colleage and I realized that we had brought home a different milk [2% - we usually buy skim] on the weekend as well. I'm leaning towards the thicker dairy product rather than the dog now. The symptoms did not seem like an animal allergy but the coincidence scared me to death. I am still mourning the loss of my other dog and the thought of getting rid of the puppy was stressing me out. Thank you for your input; the fact that you had never heard of these symptoms with an animal allergy is another rest to put my fears at rest. I guess it's back to the Doctor and no more milk!
