Allergic to Dogs? - discussion board

Welcome! This board is for sharing information, experiences, suggestions, and questions among pet allergy sufferers (people allergic to dogs). It is not intended to replace advice from medical professionals. Always contact your own allergy specialist for the diagnosis and treatment of your allergies!

There is NO "non-allergic" (no allergy causing) dog breed! All dogs produce dander, saliva, and urine that people can be allergic to. However, some dog breeds supposedly produce less dander than others. These breeds are often referred to as being "hypo-allergenic" (LESS LIKELY to cause an allergic reaction) or "allergy friendly". Read more.

For more allergy messages, visit the "Allergic to Dogs?" bb archives.

You can switch between two different board styles by clicking on the "switch to threaded style" or "switch to board style" link. I like the board style because it puts the latest messages on the top.

Please, use descriptive subject lines.

HIVES!!!

Hi-
We have a PitBull that we inherited about a year ago.
We are in love with this dog.
There are three of us in the house and yet it is only me that is suffering from hives and have been on and off for well...about a year(same time dog arrived).
I refuse to believe it is the dog (denial).
I know it is something else.
Someone told me that there is a vitamin you can give your dog to break down the acids in their saliva,
and thus...no more hive for owners.
This person can't remember what vitamin
Has anyone heard of such an easy remedy?
Please let me know... I will be scratching away here
and miserable in the meantime.:)
Thanks- Teresa

Re: HIVES!!!

Go to your local health food store. The owners and workers have a wealth of information that would be helpful to you.

Re: HIVES!!!

People tend to be allergic to dog dander and/or saliva. Check the "Allergic to Dogs?" page for tips on reducing dog dander (link on top left of the page). Giving your dog frequent baths with a mild, gentle, non-drying dog shampoo is a good way to get started. Harsh, drying shampoos can aggravate the dander problem.

You can ask your local pharmacist for advice on non-drowsy, over-the-counter antihistamines. They alleviate itching.

Re: HIVES!!!

I bought a boxer about 6 months ago, and when his paws brushed against my skin when we were playing rough, my skin would break out in bumps, which would take an hour or more to go away. I also had extremely allergic reactions such as watering eyes, sneezing, etc. Unfortunately I had to return the dog to the previous owner.

Up until that time, I had never been allergic to any pet ever, a cat, a dog, nothing.

I thought I would give it another try and I recently got another boxer, from the same breeder. while I do not have all of the allergic symptons as the previous dog, I still do get bumps on my arms, in large quantities, when I brush against his skin.

has anybody else experienced this?

I know it's not the breed because I've watched my buddies boxer for a period of two weeks before and none of these symptons occured.

any thoughts?
