cecil creighton's pet shop
G'day, I would love to hear from anyone that has memories of Cecil's pet shop in Gresham St,or,Arthur, his father. Cecil was my great uncle,Arthur,my great grandad. I believe that Cecil was also a boxer and that Arthur was classed as an ornithologist. Im currently researching the family tree with little success but stories about my relatives can often tell much more. Thanking you, Steve Theobald (grandson of Arthur jnr) |

Steve, if you go to my Smithfield page in site , there is a cracking picture of the pet shop taken in the 1930's. |

Thanks Joe, I'd seen the picture earlier and wondered if that was what his pet shop would've looked like. |

I think Creightons was the smaller of the two and FURTHER from North Street. I also think that there was also a Monkey sitting there |

Steve I have lots of memories of Cecil's pet shop up until Smithfield was burnt down it was always my next stop after I visited Micky McQuillan's record shop. I used to spend hours between the 2 pet shops but Cecil's was my favourite as he and his staff were very nice people and no matter how many questions you asked you always got a pleasant reply, my mum God rest her got all her budgies from his shop and I got goldfish, rabbits, tortoises and I got 2 white mice which my mum didn,t mind until they escaped and then there was blue murder, never caught those mice I think they made their way back to Cecil because he was so kind. Yes my childhood and early teen years were made so very pleasant by people like Cecil, thank you for bringing back those lovely memories, God Bless, Gerry.

I also rememeber a very popular pet shop in Divids Street, just a few doors above Percy Street.I remember particularly going in as a child and buying a goldfish with the lat few pennies I had and when the owner seen I had no money for fish food he kindly gave me a little box full free. |

Many thanks everyone for the replies,i have gained some insight into my great uncle.Have now had some more research done, apparently his father Arthur had the shop first and was a noted "bird fancier" and judge at bird shows. As a side note Arthur's father and grandfather both worked at Harland and Wollfe.Earlier family members came off the land, not far from Belfast. Cecil has one surviving sister living in Canada. His brother Arthur,my grandad, was a merchant seamen. He came to Australia in 1982,where I first met him.He settled in central Qld and eventually died.He was a wonderful man, Steve. |
