College Sports by Charlie
Irreverent college sports commentary. It's all about the money and has nothing to do with education.

Athletic Scolarships
I agree. Although it is probably impossible to buck the trend (U. Va. tried it in the 50's and failed - remember their football team's more than 20 year long dry spell?) I think there should be no athletic scholarships at all. Students would still go out for sports, alumni and students would still attend school athletic events, rich alumni would still donate money to the sports programs and networks would still broadcast games. All schools would be on a much more even basis. Enough of being thinly-disguised farm teams for the professional leagues! Enough of athlete students instead of student athletes! Enough of coaches' salaries being many times professors' salaries! |

We are definitely on the same page. Why have a powerful few (63 of over 1200) rule the NCAA? If everybody (all 1200) had the same institutional and organizational guidelines, the fans and TV would still support as you said. Why does the NCAA create socio-economic divisions within its own membership? --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- Replying to: I agree. Although it is probably impossible to buck the trend (U.
