College Sports by Charlie
Irreverent college sports commentary. It's all about the money and has nothing to do with education.

Charlie, get off Vandy
Reader Comment I am a fan of one of those redneckschools: Ole Miss. The Rebels certainly are trying to compete in the SEC and they certainly are worried about Vanderbilt this Saturday. If Vandy wins, I will be unhappy about itbut I will be a ****ed sight happier about losing to Vanderbilt than to LSU or Alabama. I think you are wrong about Vanderbilt being unable to compete. There is enough talent to go around to the 1-A schools so that all of them can be good. Sure, Vandy will have problems with depth but I dont see any reason why they cant compete in the SEC. I believe they willif Vandy believes it (by that I mean the administration, the coaches, and, ultimately, even the fans). One winning season--and it can happen because the belief will be there and thats all it will really take to recruit more successfully. With more success, will come stadium expansion and better facilities and all that stuff. But it can happen, even at Vandy. When I was at Ole Miss in the 1980s, I thought that the Rebels should get out of the SEC because they couldnt competeand it had nothing to do with high academic standards. It was all perception and belief. Since the current Chancellor came to Ole Miss there has been a new administration-led effort to be more competitive in sports. The administration believed it could be done. They upgraded facilities, they hired better coaches (who believed they could accomplish something) and the Rebels became more competitive. Obviously, Ole Miss is still not in the position of Georgia, Alabama, LSU, Florida, Auburn, or Tennessee. But they are competitive and can sometimes defeat the mighty football programs from those schools. Now, even their fans believe (and that sure wasnt the case 15-20 years ago). Gordon Gee believes Vandy can win. He is upgrading and improvingand now Vanderbilt seems to be turning the corner. I certainly dont expect them to win the SEC championship soon (but even though the Rebels still havent done that since 1963, they were 7-1 in the SEC West 2 years ago and all Rebel fans believe it can happen again). You should quit trying to make Gees job harder than it already is. What he needs to do to succeed is to make people believe and you are trying to make them eternal disbelievers. Why shouldnt Vandy be in the SEC? Its been there since 1933. Why shouldnt you try to promote Vandys success rather than continue to promote their failure? I think theyll get there without you anyway. Vandy is certainly proving us wrong right now. 3 and 0 and can easily be 5 - 0 if they don't let Richmond or Middle Tennessee spoil it. MTSU could be trouble because they have such an emotional advantage being just up the road and wanting to win over an SEC team. They played with Alabama for a while and it seems that Bama is pretty good. Go 'Dores |
