Message:   I am a 70 year old female who had a second right hip replacement in May 2001. In November 2005, I started to experience intense pain in my right hip. Medical analysis indicates my liner in beginning to fail. The liner was a standard polyethylene product. This was also used in my first hip replacement in 1986. Unfortunately, a year later a new liner was approved and put into use. My additional issue is bone softening and absorption, medically termed 'osteolysis'. Up until Nov 2005, I was very physically active, but now am very physically limited due to a dull pain that worsens over time. I take darvocet, to manage the pain.

I am unsure at this time if the osteolysis is related to my pain, it is still being investigated by my doctor. However my liner is failing and causing considerable discomfort. I am looking for people who have had a hip replacement with this type of liner (standard polyethylene) along with an osteolysis condition. How soon after surgery did this occur? How are you managing the pain? Medication or surgery? My physician says surgery is my only option to really address this. They are unsure if this will improve my situation. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for you time.
