Message:   Hi
I'm 35 now but i was diagnosed with AVN or osteonecrosis (on) as most people seem to call it now, after a short course of steriods at aged 25 .
I have it in my hips and shoulders. there's a great online support site called www.osteonecrosisavnsupport.org. it's got lots of very useful information and links.
I had a core decompression done at stage 3 but it didn't work and according to wht i've read since is only likely to work at stage 1 or 2. Core decompression involves having a hole bored in the bone in an attempt to encourage the blood supply through. I was on crutches for 12 weeks as the bone is very likely to break at even a little pressure. I had my first hip replacement done when i was 29 and my second hip done 1 1/2 years ago.
Doctors seem to differ on their advice around my shoulders. they can either be replaced or fused. i'd advise going to a consultant who has been recommended by someone trustworthy. my gp gave me the name of a consultant that deals only in arm problems. maybe yours could too. or email some of the hospital sites.
your daughter is in for a painful time so she will be tired. try to get her to pace herself so that she's got energy for the fun things in life. I got my car adjusted to take the pressure of my hips by using hand controls. the Occupational Therapists have a host of stuff to help out with daily tasks.
on the plus side i am married, have done lots of traveling and even gone deep sea walking. whatever else - life is what you make it - so tell your daughter to be gentle with herself and enjoy life with help and creativity she can do most things
I hope this has been of some help to you and your daughter.

My 21 yo daughter was recently diagnosed with bilateral AVN of the knees and right elbow so far. She is in the process of evaluating the other joints with MRI. Her AVN was caused by steroids for another medical condition, and this new diagnosis has been devastating. I would like to hear from other young people who've been diagnosed with AVN from steroid use, what treatments they've had and if they feel that the treatments have been helpful. Any information or insight would be greatly appreciated! Thanks,
Elise
