Re: Examples of lands expropriated to become parks/protected areas
As you have discovered, it can be difficult finding expropriation case law if you are searching by the purpose for which the land was taken. There have been many expropriations for park purposes, but the traditional law reporting services do not use information about the purpose of the expropriation when indexing their case collections so you will have trouble finding such decisions.
On the other hand, you should consider signing up for the Expropriation Law Centre case law Online Subscription Service. The cases in this collection can be searched for any words or phrases that occur within the full text of each decision. All of the cases in the collection involve expropriation so you will not spend a lot of time finding irrelevant cases.
To get more information about the Online Subscription Service, go to the home page and click on the Sign Up button. A one day trial subscription can be purchased online for $9.95.

William Ashley is referring to a case decided in 1998 by the Ontario Municipal Board. The case is known as West Hill Redevelopment Company v. Ontario. It involved a 1995 expropriation of 25 ha. of land in Scarborough (now Toronto), Ontario, for the purpose of establishing a provincial park.
