Metro 2 match report - vs Westside Sports (round 2)

Mt Gravatt 3 - 0 Westside Sports

The Hawks faced their rivals from last season in a top of the table clash at Dittmer Park on Friday night.

Westside started brightly showing excellent movement off the ball and determination to win possesion across the park. Hawks defence stood firm to the early pressure and maintained focus.

Fifteen minutes in and Mt Gravatt started to get a foothold on the game. Maguaro was again lively upfront and his pace and trickery upfront was supported by strong running by the midfield trio of Billy, Jayden and Garrrreh.

The opening goal was scored by Salt man Yarmi. A headed clearance from the Westside defence dropped to Yarmi on the edge of the area. He struck the ball on the drop and it found a gap through the crowded area, and into the bottom left corner of the net. The celebrations were strangely muted. The Hawks knew the job was not yet done.

In the second half, Hawks played a more fluent game of passing football and created plenty. Jono and Nick were dominant in defence when Westside attacked in wide area's and the rejigged midfield was working hard to extinguish any Westside attacks. Willy was excellent in the middle of the park.

The second goal came from the spot after a dubious handball decision was given against Westside. It was just reward because minutes earlier Brandon had a perfectly decent goal incorrectly ruled out for offside, despite coming from three yards behind the Westside defence. Regardless, captain Mark Wills duly converted the spot kick from 15 yards out. (hmmm!)

I can't remember who scored the third but it might have been Willy or Brandon or Billy (cos they look like triplets sometimes)...Lukey set it up with a craftly little reverse pass.

I'm at work so I'll have to finish this quickly. The Hawks (40 points) are now proudly perched six points clear of Westside sports (34 points). Brisbane City (30 points) have a game in hand on the Hawks. If they win that they will sit 7 points adrift. Jimboomba (31 points) are nine behind the leaders, with Brighton (29 points) and Albany Creek (25 points from 15 games). So it looks like 4 from 6 teams in the run in.
Hawks have six games remaining. Four of those teams are currently sitting in the bottom places on the ladder. Brighton (5th) and Jimboomba (4th) are the other games left to play.
If the Hawks stay focused they should take home the Premiership. COME ON HAWKS!!!
