The Hawks scored a massive psychological blow and laid the demons of last season to rest with an impressive 2-0 win against Jimboomba on Friday.
The expected torrent of aggression from Jimboomba didn't really materialise as Hawks set about their business in determined fashion. In the first half Paulie Peterson had to be alert when saving an early shot on his near post, and later a header from a corner (also to the near post). But apart from those two attempts, the Hawks restricted Jimboomba's efforts at goal by keeping the ball for long periods and using the width of the park cleverly. The back four were well protected by Billy, Gaz and Jay in the middle who won tackles and headers a plenty.
Meanwhile, Andy Magwaro and Lukey Bowness looked sharp upfront with Yami roaming around and finding needles to thread with his passing.
The first goal came ten minutes into the game, and came straight out of the 'Wills training park manual(c) 1982.' . Textbook.
A long throw from Billy was flicked on by Magwaro. Jay then nodded on at the near post, and Lukey Bowness applied the finishing touch as he nodded back across the face of the keeper and into the net.
A second was added midway through the first half when the ball found it's way to Andy Magwaro on the left. His pinpoint cross found Willy free in the box, and from 12 yards out he applied the finish with a composed volley.
Jimboomba came out in the second half in more determined fashion but they failed to create any clear cut chances. Indeed, their only real opportunity was gifted to them by the referee when he blew up, first for a handball outwide, and then for a handball in the box from the resulting freekick. However, Paulie Peterson guess the right way and made a cracking save down to his right.
The bad news for Hawks was that shortly after the penalty saved, Paulie Peterson was stretchered off with suspected ligament damage to the left knee.
Mt Gravatt face Pine Hills next week without Gary (suspended), Willy (chasing an overseas contract) and possibly Paulie Peterson (knee).
On a personal note, I wish the boys all the best for the finals. COME ON THE MIGHTY HAWKS!!!
