With less than two weeks to kick off, Football Brisbane has kindly been good enough to release the fixtures for the Metro 2 competition.
The Premiership winning Hawks Metro 2 team commence the defence of their title at home to Brisbane Olympic – who are welcomed back to the Metro stable after the clubs foray into the QSL. It’s sure to be a tough opener for the Hawks, who have lost last seasons regular keeper, Paulie Peterson (ACL surgery), and newly recruited Ben Sciacca (compound fracture of the thumb). Metro 6 striker, Amos Hamstring is expected to fill the void behind the rock solid defence, marshalled once again by player/coach Mark Wills.
The first road trip is to Moggill – which sounds and probably is a terrible place to play. The new boys – Brett, Luke, Peter, Jordi and Daniel Carter will have to settle in quickly in order to take points from this one.
Next up,the Hawks welcome Redlands United who roll into town off the back of their promotion as Premiership Metro 3 winners. Then, it’s another favourite road trip to Jimboomba. This match is always a tasty fixture and the Boomba boys will be keen to get one over the Hawks after they only managed a point at home last season, and were convincingly beaten at Dittmer. Quite a rivalry has built up here.
The games don’t get any easier with Redcliffe PCYC (3rd in Metro 3 last time around) arriving at Dittmer. Traditionally stronger at home than on the road, Redcliffe will be keen to take something from this one after the long drive. Albany Creek are next up. They finished disappointingly in mid-table last season after a strong start to the season in which they beat the Hawks 3-2.
Back at Dittmer, Hawks will face Grange Thistle – relegated from Metro 1 after a rock bottom finish.
Then it’s another GPS setting road trip to Pine Hills. They were poor last season and will be looking to improve upon their 7-1 home defeat at the hands of the Hawks in 2009. Easts arrive at Dittmer next up. They are another team who will be looking to avenge the 9-0 drubbing dished out to them last season in Hawks dream performance. Hawks won’t be taking them lightly though, knowing full well that Easts were not as bad as that result.
Then it’s West End Partizans – an unknown quantity who, despite being beaten twice, were troublesome opponents for Hawks last season.
Finally, it’s another GPS’er to North Pine. By all accounts, the Piners were abject opponents in 2009, letting in 13 goals without reply in their two games against the Hawks.
Then it’s back to Olympic for the second round...
