Mt Gravatt continued their 100% record at home to Slacks Creek - but it was the toughest battle yet!
The game kicked off late but Creek were full of running from the first whistle. The speed and skill of Slacks number 8 in the right midfield position was unsettling, and it became necessary for one of the central players to cover this danger. That lead to the mobile number 9 in the centre of the park getting beyond his marker and supporting his attackers. Slacks looked the more fluent side early on but Hawks gradually found a way into the game and started to hold onto the ball a bit further up the park.
But Creek continued to press midway through the half and although they never got many shots on target they put immense pressure on the Hawks. Approaching the half hour mark, Creeks big number 4 skillfully picked his way through the middle of the park and ended up shooting just wide. At the other end, Russ, the Hawks striker was pulled to the ground on two occasions - one looked like a penalty - the other was a stone wall penalty - but unbelievably on both occasions the ref waved play on. Despite this, Creek would undoubtably feel hard done by, when on 30 minutes Magic Mohanned combined with John and Russ before twinkle toeing past the Creek defence and blasting into the net.
Hawks could have had another - Russ just failing to get a foot on the end of a good through ball.
In the second half, the game continued to be a fairly even contest. Creek continued to press and Hawks continued to scrap and scrape for possession of the football.
Hawks had to reorganise when my knee got twisted into unfamiliar territory. Ouch!
With half an hour remaining, Hawks added a much needed second through Dan Nyugen who finished neatly (so I'm told - I was looking the other way). Although Creek continued to play good football, the intensity and belief seemed to drop out of their game.
Hawks could have given the score a flattering look when Johnny boy shot into the side netting from a narrow angle.
Creek went down to 10 men late in the game - a second yellow for a terrible lunge at Brettles.
Overall, I was impressed with Creek - and also impressed with how much the Hawks stuck with it when our normal fluency was lacking. Great result for the Hawks - unlucky for the Creek boys.
Looking forward to the visit of the Bulldogs on Friday.
