Metro 4 match report vs Holland Park Hawks (fixture 8)
Mt Gravatt Hawks 4 – 1 Holland Park Hawks
The high flying Mt Gravatt Hawks Metro 4 team completed their final game on the Cabbage Patch Pitch in celebratory mood, clipping the wings of the pretend Hawks from Holland Park in convincing fashion.
I was there with pen and paper to record the action. I ran out of paper in the second half - such was the dominance of Mt Gravatt in the second stanza.
The game started out significantly more evenly than the bobble laden pitch with Holland Park looking to be a neat and tidy outfit. Mt Gravatt fired a warning shot after only two minutes when action man Toby found himself in unfamiliar territory. His effort skidded across the face of goal. Not to be outdone, HPHs followed the lead of Rory Delap as their #3 hurled the ball into the box and somehow found the feet of the HPH forward. His composed touch with the outside of the boot, looked goal ward bound and had Hussein scrambling across his goal. Fortunately for us, the cabbage planted on the left side of the six yard box sprouted just in time to divert the ball around the post.
Mounties continued to press. After five minutes Ross struck a free kick over the bar from the left side of the box after Magical Mohanned was felled as he jinked towards the HPH goal.
HPH caused more problems for the Mounties defence when a cross from the right fell at the feet to the HPH forward. His first touch allowed Greg to get back and impressively pressure the player wide – his shot from an acute angle went wayward.
On the quarter hour, Mounties went ahead for the eighth time in nine games. The ball was played out from the back and worked through midfield. A neat looking through ball from Ayed was well intercepted by a HPH defender – however, the clearance fell to Johnny boy who instinctively clipped the ball up on the half turn, spun and hit an unstoppable volley past the despairing keeper from fully 30 yards. A certain goal of the season contender that is only likely to be beaten when I finally get back on the field and swing my magical right boot at the ball – my right boot rarely touches the ball so it’s always magical when it does. Anyway, back to the game...Despite being a serial offside offender, Johnny boy has really given Rich a new dimension at the pointy end of the park.
More chances were to follow for Mt Gravatt. Magical Moe saw his long range effort graze the top of the goal. An even better chance fell his way minutes later when some wonderful lead up play found him unmarked in the box. Unfortunately for Mounties his shot was directed just wide.
Russell was also causing problems for the HPH defence with his strength and mobility. Following a wonderful run, his final effort lacked power. Out wide Greg and Dan were involved in sending a number of good crosses over for the attack to feed off.
HPH were by no means out of the game though, and played some tidy football at times. Indeed, they probably deserved their equaliser when it arrived on the half hour. A cross played in from the right just grazed Big Jeff Little Jeffs head before falling kindly to the HPH attacker. His finish was composed.
The half continued to ebb and flow but no further goals were scored in the opening stanza.
The second half started in spritely fashion, with Mt Gravatt upping the tempo. Good work from Dan on the right lead to HPH conceding a corner. Big Jeff Little Jeff got his infeasibly large cranium to the cross firing a bullet header into the back of the net. HPHs surrounded the referee to appeal his decision to award the goal on the grounds that Jeff’s head is so large, it was an unfair advantage when he trundled into the oppositions 18 yard box. I have some sympathy for their sentiments. But the goal was allowed to stand.
Wave after wave of attack followed as Mounties looked for the cushion of a 2 goal lead. Greg set about the HPH defence with a powerful run which was brought to an abrupt halt 25 yards out. Ayed’s freekick was on target but lacked power and was comfortably saved. Greg was involved again as he drifted inside, exchanged passes with Russ and then got on the end of a cross. His head was again well fielded by the impressive HPH keeper.
The third was added shortly afterwards as the HPHs challenge fell away. Johnny Boy (I can’t think of a decent name for him) was at his best again as he rifled home from just inside the box.
The fourth and final goal came when Magic Moe jinked inside the box only to be felled. Ross and John had a quick game of patter cake patter cake with the ball before Ross won the day with the ‘I’m shorter, older, and considerably better looking than you’ argument. His spot kick was dispatched with aplomb.
Great win boys...now lets get Bethania finished off.
