Mt Gravatt 2 - 0 Beenleigh
The Hawks continued their surge towards the Metro 4 Premiership with a 2 - 0 win against Beenleigh at the weekend. The Sunday afternoon kickoff did little for the energy levels and it took a while for the game to spark.
Beenleigh are an accomplished side that know how to play football. The Hawks talked before the game about keeping the ball and trying to frustrate their opposition who would be eager for the win to leapfrog Greenbank into 5th and within striking distance of 4th place.
The first quarter of the game was dominated by the defences of both teams with the ball largely stuck in the midfield areas. The Hawks defence were wary of the Beenleigh forwards movement across the line, with number 8 and 14 trying to spring any gaps that appeared.
At the other end, the Hawks pressed and probed with Jack, Russell and Harry shooting without troubling the Beenleigh custodian.
Beenleigh defended corners well, and even Jeff's enormous head was unable to get enough meat on the ball to trouble the keeper.
As the game progressed Dan, Dick and Jack began to make inroads into the Beenleigh box. On one such occasion, Dick turned sharply in the box before laying the ball off to Harry. His shot smothered by an oncoming defender.
The deadlock was broken on 20 minutes, a tap in by Harry after great work from Jack and Dick.
The Hawks were relatively comfortable for the remainder of the half and probably enjoyed more of the ball.
The second half started in end to end fashion but a weak backpass was intercepted by Johnny Boy on 47 minutes. He danced around the keeper and a defender before slotting home from an acute angle. Hawks top scorer getting his customary goal a game.
Hawks rarely let a 2 goal lead slip so were happy to get the second and then sit and wait for the gaps to open up as Beenleigh came onto us. And that's what happened. Some lively midfield and forward movement created a few openings for the Beenleigh boys. Number 14 went close on a couple of occasions, one going wide and the other well saved by the Incredible Huss.
At the other end, some goal mouth scrambles saw the Beenleigh goal line living a charmed life. Russell was starting to dominate the middle of the park as Beenleigh tired.
The result probably a fair one - looking forward to Darron's match report.
I wish the Beenleigh boys the best of luck. Play a good brand of footy and would like to see them in finals contention. Not sure what happened to after match drink Daz, you piker.
The Hawks have got Slacks Creek down at Usher Park on Friday, while Beenleigh entertain Greenbank. A big game for both sides.
I tipped the Creek for 4th spot but I reckon it could go to the wire.
