Yeah, I had the exact same problem...I always thought it was just a bad rom file, though...hmmm...you didn't happen to download your rom from www.darkdimensionbase.com, did you?
I had a similar problem with Advance Wars. Whenever I select a mech or an artillery vehicle, the game crashes.
