I recall Dinah Sheridan appearing on an episode of "This is Your Life" some years ago - I believe the subject was John Gregson. In it she explained that the crash scene was an unscripted, real accident which had happened due to Gregson concentrating too much on the dialogue as the characters were at that moment bickering. The decision was made to incorporate the scene in the film. Naturally with the tight budget and shooting schedules, the film would have had to be re-scripted there and then to accomodate this and to my mind it leads to an unsatisfactory and rushed looking outcome in which the (naturally) aggrieved Allard driver eventually speeds away.
