Hi, I am a medical student, reviewing for my final OBGYN exams in a few days when I came across your site. Very helpful info, thank you. Also read your story, truly heart breaking. I have a younger brother born that same year in July. Nathan would have been 20 this year. Although it seemed like a long time am sure that not a day doesn\'t go by that you dont think about him. He\'s always with you no matter what and knew he was loved. :)

Comments:

its very stressful to have this and try to be happy for a soon to be baby and add to it having gestational diabetes...im 36 weeks currently and will have my baby hopefully this week after they check her lungs to see if theyve developed enough to be born...i feel for all the mamas who have lost their babies from this and wish it wasnt so horrible to deal with if it wasnt diagnosed sooner...but we need more research to be able to save more and more babies...i pray daily that mine will be ok and healthy...

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I will was just doing research so that I could better understand vasa previa for tomorrows test. I don't think I will ever be able to forget what vasa previa is or how it affects the families of these poor babies.

Thanks again

What brings you to Nathan's pages?

I too had vasa previa with the birth of my daughter in Oct. 2008. I am attempting to write a book and was trying to find a way to explain what vasa previa is.

Where are you from?

Valencia, California

Comments:

I'm not sure how to even begin. I am so very sorry for your loss, however grateful you are sharing Nathan's story with the world, not only to educate people about vasa previa, but also to celebrate your sons life. I too lost a baby, not from vasa previa, from a spontanious bleed of the placenta. I was 35 weeks along when I lost our sweet baby girl, Lane. We lost her in 2003 and had a healthy baby boy, Nathan. Your story is so touching to me, not only because we have both lost children, and had vasa previa, but also because our sweet baby boys share the same name. I feel like people are brought into our lives for a reason and I feel as though I was supposed to be here tonight. I have cried for your child and mine tonight and noticed in the poem at the bottom of Nathan's story is the word "Lane", my daughters name.

I was diagnosed with vasa previa with my daughter Briar in 2008. I had a lot of blood test ran with her due to what happened with my first pregnancy and they found that I had anti M antibodies. We thought this was going to be very serious and possibly life threatening to our baby, however my body did not produce any antibodies towards her, great news. In one of my ultrasound with the neonatologist, he was doing the Doppler ultrasound and found that I had vasa previa. I know how blessed we were to be seeing this doctor, even my obgyn admitted had I not been seeing him the vasa previa would have gone undetected. I ended up delivering our daughter, Briar Lane, she and her brother both bare there sisters name as their middle names, Oct. 15th 2008. I try to thank god for her everyday, as you and I know the outcome could have been very different. Thank you so much for sharing your story and for having a place where I could share mine. Tonight, I pray for you and your family and your continued peace. I hope tonight your Nathan and my Lane are somewhere in heaven dancing and laughing together!

Sincerely,
Nikki

Thankyou for sharing your love and heartbreak with Nathan, with us. I found more out in ten minutes here than I've been told by the medical profession in Oz.

I am so very sorry for your loss. August 2008, I was being induced because during my NST my baby's heart rate fell to below 70, but after a few min came back up. I was 39wks, so an induction was the next step since they didn't know why her heart rate was doing this. After 20hrs of failed induction, my water was broken. Instead of "water" blood came out and lots of it. I was rushed to have a C-sect and I was scared out of my mind. I had no idea what was going on. My daughter was born, but no one said a word. A nurse passed by me with her back to me so I couldn't see my daughter. The next thing I see is them intubating her. After much silence, the doctor came to me and let me know that my baby was very sick. I was more than confused...

She lost her blood and took them 10minutes to resuscitate her. Anyway, the story goes and goes...but my outcome was not horrific, but I remember in those days where I just prayed my daughter would be able to come home with me. She did, a few days after me.

When I read about vasa previa, I still can't believe she's with me. I am so sorry for your loss. Thank you for putting Nathan's story out there and a place where others can learn about this.

What brings you to Nathan's pages?

I'm a L&D nurse, doing a continued ed course on Complications of Pregnancy. I wanted more clarification about vaso previa.

Where are you from?

Comments:

Thank you so much for sharing/educating us about vaso previa. I have been a L&D nurse since 1988 but have never taken care of a patient with vaso previa. It is indeed a very rare happening. By reading your story and viewing your photos, I now understand the seriousness of this condition, and will be more mindful as I examine my patients. I'm so sorry for your loss. Nathan was definitey a beautiful baby! I pray that many lives will be saved becasue of your story. Thank you once again, and may God continue to comfort you.
