ackee seeds

Hello,
I recently was in Jamaica and brought home two ackeee seeds. I live in Arizona, USA. Will the ackee tree grow in this hot/arid climate? If so, what temperature does the soil need to be before I plant the seeds? Also, do I need to soak the seeds in water prior to planting?

Hi Robert you didn't say what part of Arizona you are in. So i am not sure what temperatures we are dealing with.
However,the Ackee tree is a tropical tree. It will survive occasional temperature drops to 28 degrees. It should also be able to survive temperatures of a hundred degrees and over. If properly watered. To start the plant would suggest you keep it in a large pot for a year or two, in the shade. After that i believe it can handle anything Arizona has to throw at it.

As far as growing the seeds go, the best growing there is really no real need to for any special treatment. These seeds fall off the tree and grow just laying on the ground. However, keeping them moist will help. No need to soak them in water. Just put them in the ground and keep the soil moist. Ackee (Blighia sapida) is a tropical fruit tree native to West Africa and widely cultivated in Jamaica and other parts of the Caribbean. While it thrives in warm climates, it can be a bit challenging to grow in Arizona’s hot and arid environment, but not impossible with the right care and conditions.

🌡️ Climate & Temperature Needs
Ackee prefers:

Tropical to subtropical climates

Warm temperatures year-round (ideally between 75–85°F / 24–29°C)

Protection from frost or extreme cold (temps below 50°F / 10°C can stress or kill young plants)

In Arizona, especially in lower desert areas, the intense dry heat, low humidity, and cold winters (depending on your location) can be problematic. You may need to:

Grow the tree in a large container so it can be moved indoors during colder months

Provide shade during the hottest part of the day

Ensure good irrigation and mulching to retain soil moisture

🌱 Soil Temperature for Planting
Wait until the soil temperature consistently reaches at least 70°F (21°C) before planting outdoors. Ackee seeds germinate best in warm, moist, and well-drained soil.
